Slow Feeder Bowls: Every Dog Should Have One

Some dogs eat like the food owes them money. Bowl down. Bowl empty. Three seconds. I've timed it. Then they look at me like I never fed them. Ever. In their life. ๐คฃ
I've spent decades in the pet industry caring for the well-being of just about every species, from reptiles and birds to small companion animals. Now I'm a spiritual introvert with a pack of rescue dogs, one high-maintenance Maltese, and one cat. And I have opinions. One of them: every dog should have a slow feeder. I keep several. If we ever go anywhere, the slow feeder bowls are coming with us.
Small and medium dogs
MateeyLife 2-Pack Slow Feeder Dog Bowls on Amazon
Two bowls in a pack. Each holds about 2 cups. The maze makes them work for it without making them quit. Dry, wet, or raw food all work, per the listing. Lots of colors. I. LOVE. THIS. BOWL. ๐
The honest part: it's about 8 inches across, made for small and medium dogs. Big dogs, keep scrolling. Some owners say it slides on hardwood. Some say it cracked. It's plastic. It is not a chew toy, no matter what your dog says.
Big dogs
Outward Hound Fun Feeder Slo Bowl, Large on Amazon
This is the big kid. Almost 12 inches across, holds 4 cups, sits right on the floor, and it's their "slowest" maze. Over 127,000 ratings. That's a lot of fast eaters getting humbled. ๐ Heads up: some owners of big-snouted dogs say it's hard to reach into the narrow grooves, and it's still not a chew toy.
Real facts, no fluff
- A Purdue study of 1,637 large and giant breed dogs linked faster eating to higher bloat (GDV) risk. (JAVMA, 2000)
- A later review called that evidence mixed. It found no sign that slowing down causes harm. (Veterinary Evidence)
- Raised bowls were also linked to higher bloat risk, so the floor is the safer default. (Veterinary Evidence)
- VCA says speed-eating can cause regurgitation, and interactive feeders add mental stimulation. (VCA)
- In a small study, fast eaters showed a stress-type response after meals. Slower feeding calmed it down. (PLOS ONE, 2015)
Vet note: I'm not a vet, and this isn't vet advice. A swollen belly plus retching with nothing coming up is an emergency. Call your vet right away.
