The Doggy Go-Bag: My Dog Diaper Bag Checklist ๐

Moms have diaper bags. Dog moms have go-bags. Same energy. ๐
Mine lives packed and ready by the door. Vet run, road trip, or "let's just go," we grab it and GO. ๐๐จ
Here's what's inside, plus the stuff I'd buy if I were starting today.
1. The bag itself ๐
My pick: PetAmi Dog Travel Bag Organizer, Medium About 14.5" x 8" x 12" with pockets for days. It comes with 2 food containers and 2 collapsible bowls, and the lining wipes clean.
Also cute: LARIPOP Dog Travel Bag Comes with 2 collapsible bowls, 2 airtight food containers, and a feeding mat. Fewer reviews than the PetAmi, but they're great so far.
2. Water, ALWAYS ๐ง
Rule number one: my pack always has fresh water. Always. I pack water from home in case there's none where we stop.
Collapsible bowls: - SLSON Collapsible Silicone Bowls, 2-Pack in macaron colors. Cute AND they fold flat. ๐ - Collapsible Travel Bowls, 2-Pack with Carabiners. Over 31,000 ratings and super cheap. - Guardians Collapsible Bowls, 4-Pack. One for every pocket of every bag.
Water bottles with a built-in bowl: - Cibaabo Dog Water Bottle with Food Container. Water on one end, a little treat compartment on the other. Genius. - Kalimdor Leak-Proof Dog Water Bottle. Squeeze, they drink, done. - PupFlask Stainless Steel Water Bottle. The big one, for big drinkers.
3. Treats that can ride along ๐ฆด
Sealed containers, dry treats, no sticky mess.
- OXO Pet Airtight Treat Container. Holds 1 cup, opens one-handed, and the seal keeps treats fresh.
- Everusely Stainless Steel Snack Containers, 8 oz, 4-Pack. Metal tins with leakproof lids. One for treats, one for a meal, and spares.
- RoyalCare Silicone Treat Pouch. Clips on, and the wide opening turns inside out, so it's easy to wash.
The treats I actually pack are in my car ride post. ๐
Honest heads up: the car is NOT a pantry. Pack treats fresh for each trip and bring them back inside after. Heat breaks food down.
4. The "uh oh" pouch: spare leash and collar ๐จ
A leash breaks. A clip fails. Somebody slips a collar. It happens.
So I keep a spare in a cute little zipper pouch, and it lives in the go-bag.
The pouch: - Dog Print Small Cosmetic Bag. Tiny, cheap, and adorable. - Dog Paw Print Makeup Bags, 2-Pack. One for the go-bag, one for the car. - SUNEE Large Zipper Pouch. Bigger, for a harness too.
The spare: - Mendota Slip Leash (leash AND collar in one). Made in the USA. The 3/8" size is for dogs 50 lbs and under. - TagME Slip Lead, Hot Pink. Reflective stitching and a padded handle, in three sizes.
A slip lead is a walking backup. It is NOT for tethering in the car. In the car, always clip to a harness (more on that here).
5. Poop bags and wipes ๐ฉ๐งป
- Earth Rated Poop Bags, 270 Count. Leak-proof and over 250,000 ratings. The people have spoken. ๐
- Pogi's Dog Wipes for Travel, 6 Packs. Fragrance-free, for paws and butts. Six little travel packs.
6. The paperwork ๐
A copy of vaccine records, especially rabies. I keep a paper copy in the bag AND a photo on my phone. Add your vet's number and a 24-hour emergency vet near where you're headed.
My go-bag checklist โ
- Water from home + a collapsible bowl
- Treats in a sealed container
- Spare leash/collar in the "uh oh" pouch
- Poop bags
- Pet wipes
- Copy of vaccine records + vet numbers
- Any meds they take
- ID tags on their collars, always
The honest part
- These bags are polyester and zippers, not luggage that lasts forever. Treat them nicely.
- Collapsible bowls are for travel, not for chewers. Pick them up when the drinking's done.
- Freeze-dried and raw-type treats need clean hands. Details are in the car ride post.
Real facts, no fluff
- The AVMA's packing list for traveling pets includes proof of vaccination (especially rabies), copies of medical records, ID tags, a leash, food and water bowls, water in case there's none at a stop, medications, a first aid kit, and emergency vet numbers. (AVMA)
- The CDC says to bring plenty of water, food, a bowl, a leash, waste bags, medication, and travel documents, including proof of rabies vaccination. (CDC)
- VCA suggests bringing water from home, since water in other areas can contain different minerals that may upset your dog's stomach. It also says to offer water at rest stops. (VCA)
- The FDA says to store pet food and treats somewhere cool and dry, below 80ยฐF, because heat and moisture can break down nutrients. It also suggests keeping them in the original bag when you can. (FDA)
- The AVMA says ID tags with current info and a registered microchip improve the chances your pet gets home if you're separated. (AVMA)
Vet note: I'm not a vet, and this isn't vet advice. Before a big trip, check with your vet about vaccines, meds, and anything your pet needs where you're going.
